Sales Tax

Sales Tax Compliance Services for Multi-State Businesses

Our sales tax compliance services start with one question: where do you owe? Since the Supreme Court decided South Dakota v. Wayfair in 2018, a business can owe sales tax in a state where it has no office or employees. We run the nexus review, register you, file your returns and defend you if a state comes asking.

01

Where you owe sales tax

Nexus is the connection to a state that obliges you to collect its sales tax. Physical nexus comes from things like an office, inventory in a warehouse, an employee or a trade show booth. Economic nexus comes from sales volume. Many states set the threshold at $100,000 in sales into the state, and some add a transaction count. The numbers and the measurement periods differ by state and states revise them, so we check the current rule for each state rather than apply one threshold to all of them.

We start with your sales by state for the past several years, your fulfillment locations and the marketplaces you sell through. From that data we build a nexus map showing where you must register, where you are close to a threshold and where you may already owe back tax.

02

Registration, collection and filing

After the review we register you in each required state and set up your cart, invoicing or point-of-sale system to charge the right rate. Taxability is the harder part. Clothing, software, food, shipping charges and digital goods are taxed differently from state to state, and a product that is exempt in one state may be taxable in the next.

We prepare and file your returns monthly, quarterly or annually, as each state assigns, and we reconcile the tax you collected to the tax you remit. When the two do not match, we find the cause before the return goes out.

03

Back taxes and voluntary disclosure

If the review shows you should have been collecting in a state and were not, you have options. Most states run voluntary disclosure programs that limit the look-back period and waive penalties for businesses that come forward before the state contacts them. We prepare the application, negotiate the terms and file the back returns. Acting before a notice arrives is almost always the cheaper path.

04

Audit representation

State sales tax audits ask for sales detail, exemption certificates and proof of tax remitted. We assemble the records, respond to information requests and deal with the auditor directly so that you do not have to. Where an assessment looks wrong, we review the sample and the projection method and file an appeal when the numbers support one.

05

Marketplace sales and use tax

Selling through Amazon, Etsy, eBay or Walmart Marketplace changes who collects the tax. Most states have marketplace facilitator laws that make the platform collect and remit on your behalf. Those sales still count toward your thresholds in some states, and you may still need a permit and a return. Sales from your own website and wholesale sales follow different rules again.

Businesses also owe use tax on purchases where the seller did not charge sales tax, such as equipment bought from an out-of-state vendor. We review your purchases for use tax exposure as part of the engagement, since it is one of the areas auditors check.

Do I owe sales tax if I only sell online?

Possibly. Economic nexus rules apply to online sellers once sales into a state pass its threshold, and marketplace facilitator laws change who collects on marketplace sales. A nexus review shows your position state by state.

What happens if I missed registering in a state?

Most states offer voluntary disclosure agreements that limit back tax and waive penalties if you apply before the state contacts you. We handle the application and the back filings.

Can you file in every state?

Yes. We file in any state that levies sales and use tax, including home-rule jurisdictions that have their own local returns.

Will you handle an audit notice?

Yes. Send us the notice and we manage the records request and the auditor communication, and we appeal an assessment when the numbers support it.
