What a fractional CFO does
A full-time CFO is a significant expense, and many businesses do not have enough work to keep one busy. A fractional CFO supplies the same planning and oversight for a set number of hours each month. We attend your monthly review, build and maintain the forecast, watch the metrics that matter for your industry and bring you recommendations with the numbers behind them.
The engagement sits on top of reliable books. If your bookkeeping is current, we start with planning right away. If it is not, we can fix the foundation first through our bookkeeping team.
Budgeting and forecasting
We build the annual budget with you, starting from last year's actual results and the changes you expect: price increases, new hires, lost customers, new product lines. Each month we compare the budget to actual results, explain the variances and revise the forecast for the remaining months. The goal is a forecast you trust enough to act on.
For businesses with seasonal revenue, we add a thirteen-week cash forecast. It shows week by week what is coming in, what is going out and where the low point falls, which tells you when to draw on a credit line or delay a purchase.
Cash flow and working capital
Profitable businesses still run out of cash. Customers pay in sixty days while suppliers and payroll are due in thirty, and growth makes the gap wider. We review your receivables collection, inventory levels and payment terms and show how much working capital you need at your current and planned size. Where the gap is large, we outline options such as tighter collection terms, supplier negotiations or a line of credit, and prepare the financial package a lender will ask for.
Growth decisions and startups
Opening a second location, buying a competitor or raising money each rest on a financial model. We build models that show the cost, the break-even point and the cash required before the new venture pays for itself. For startups we prepare the budget, the cap table inputs and the monthly investor reporting that early backers expect. We also advise on entity structure and on the point at which the bookkeeping, payroll and tax functions should move to a more formal setup.
Metrics we track for you
The right metrics depend on the business. For a service firm they include utilization, realization and revenue per employee. For a retailer they include inventory turns, gross margin by category and sales per square foot. For a subscription company they include monthly recurring revenue, churn and customer acquisition cost. We agree on a short list during the diagnostic and report it every month with a target next to each figure.
A short list does more than a long one. Owners who review six metrics every month tend to act on them, while owners given fifty tend to skim. We refine the list as the business changes.

Diagnostic
We review your financials, goals and decisions you face in the next twelve months.
- 2
Model build
We create the budget, forecast and cash model from your actual results.
- 3

A standing meeting to go through results, variances and decisions.
- 4
Ongoing support
Between meetings you can reach us with questions as decisions come up.
How many hours a month does a fractional CFO engagement include?
It depends on the size and complexity of the business. Most engagements run between four and twenty hours a month, and we set the number after the diagnostic.
Do I need clean books before we start?
Reliable monthly books make the work more useful. If yours are behind, our bookkeeping team can bring them current while planning begins.
Can you help me prepare for a bank loan or investor meeting?
Yes. We prepare the projections, the historical statements and the supporting schedules that lenders and investors request.
Do you work with startups?
Yes. We prepare budgets, runway projections and investor reports, and we advise on the point to formalize accounting functions.
